Brotherhood Winery
Among the many things that have changed as I get older is my tolerance for alcohol, which nowadays is practically non-existent. With two drinks and I am basically done, and if you manage to have me drink three I'm on a fast track to not feeling my nose and quite possibly leaving personal belongings behind. Ask anyone who knows me.
That said, I would never say no to a wine tour and getting out of town, and I also thought it was just about the best thing I could do on a Sunday with with my mom who was visiting last week.
For this city escapade, we went to Brotherhood Vineyard, the oldest winery in the US, established in 1839! The company no longer cultivates the grapes on site as they cannot produce the amount they need to keep up with their current production rate, so this might not be the vineyard you are after if what you are looking for are endless rows of grape trees. However, it sure still is a treat to visit!
The winery has been owned by 3 families by now, and it currently has an interesting relationship with Chile, where the current head of the company also produces wine.
We got to Washingtonville around 10:30am, which is about an hour away from NY once you cross the George Washington Bridge, and had breakfast and coffee at a really cute Bed and Breakfast in town. Once at the vineyard, we signed up for the 11:30am tour (only $10 per person!) which took us underground to check out the cellars, old event spaces, the family’s private cellar which hasn't been touched in ages and ending with a fun tasting.
It was so great to get out of town and to finally take my Mom to a wine tour and tasting, which she hadn't done before. She loved it so much she can't wait to bring Dad with us again!
So the next time the parents are in town and you are looking for a fun and quick getaway try visiting Brotherhood Vineyard. It will probably work like a charm if you are with your significant other’s family, since they'll be all drunk and buying wine left and right by the end of it, and you'll seem cultured and charming in return. That's a win in my book.
Entre muchas de las cosas que han ido cambiando mientras me pongo más adulta es mi tolerancia al alcohol, la cual en estos días básicamente no existe. Con dos tragos estoy lista y si logras que llegue a tres estoy a dos pasos de no sentirme la nariz y de dejar pertenencias personales detrás. Pregúntale a cualquiera de mis amigos.
Sin embargo, nunca le diría que no a un tour en un viñedo y a salir de la ciudad, y además pensé que esta sería la actividad perfecta para un Domingo mientras mi Mamá me visitaba la semana pasada.
Para esta escapada nos fuimos al viñedo llamado Brotherhood, el cual fue establecido en 1839, haciéndolo el más antiguo de los Estados Unidos! La compañía ya no cultiva sus propias uvas dentro de la propiedad ya que necesitan una cantidad enorme para mantener el nivel de producción que tienen, por lo que si lo que quieres son filas y filas de uvas este tal vez no es el viñedo que andas buscando, pero aun así vale la pena echarle un vistazo.
El viñedo ha sido manejado por tres familias diferentes en su historia y ahora mismo tienen una interesante relación con Chile, donde la actual cabecera de la compañía también produce vino.
Llegamos al pueblo de Washingtonville a eso de las 10:30AM, el cual queda a más o menos una hora de NY cruzando el Puente George Washington, y nos paramos a beber café y disfrutar un buen desayuno en un ‘Bed and Breakfast’ a unas cuadras del viñedo. Una vez en el viñedo nos anotamos para el tour de las 11:30AM (solo cuesta $10 por persona!), que nos llevó a las áreas subterráneas de la propiedad donde almacenan los vinos y el champán, áreas donde todavía se hacen eventos y el almacén privado de la familia original, el cual tiene muchísimos años sin ser tocado, para luego terminar con una degustación de algunos de sus vinos.
Fué tan agradable salir de la ciudad por algunas horas y finalmente poder llevar a Ma a un viñedo, algo que ella nunca había hecho. Le gustó tanto la experiencia que no puede esperar a volver para traer a Pa!
Así que la próxima vez que vengas o estés con tus padres y estés buscando algo simple pero divertido para hacer con ellos trata de darte un viaje al viñedo Brotherhood. Seguro que es perfecto para llevar la familia de tu pareja, ya que todos estarán un poco borrachos -especialmente si vas en la mañana- y comprarán vinos a dos manos mientras tú te ves cómo alguien muy cultural y encantador, lo cual es una victoria en mi libro si me preguntas.
