If you asked anyone who knows me about my favorite place in Santiago, they’d definitely agree in their answer: Centro León. As one of the most important museums in the Caribbean, it has all kinds of excellent quality offerings for every public, taste, and budget. The cafeteria, the gardens, the gift shop, the galleries of course… All of it exudes Culture, with a capital C.

For me though, the beauty of this place lies in the small things: The taste of that mouth-watering carrot cake, how I can spend hours feeling the breeze and reading a book in the gardens, or how easy it is to get out of work in ripped jeans and a messy ponytail, and end up at the opening of a Dalí exhibition called Dalí: Ilustrando Genios.

That last one is a true story.

I was just having dinner after a long day at work when I got a text from a friend asking “Are you coming to the Dalí opening?”, and I, confidently, answered “That’s tomorrow, correct?”. “No, actually”, he said. “It starts in 15 minutes.” At this time, it's not hard to picture me going into panic mode, since I had been waiting months for this. Why did I have it for Friday on my calendar? Why did I wear my old Converse to work today, which I never do? I thought all of this for a fraction of a second, but after a brief exchange I texted him: “Wait for me, I’m on my way.” And boy, did I not regret it.

For some strange reason people decided to dress specially nice for the event, on the same day that I’m rocking my swept-back hair and worn-out sneakers, yet from the introductory words of Maria Amalia León, the director of Centro León, I was simply over the moon. The exhibit, showcasing two collections of Dalí’s illustrations about The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderon de la Barca, was more charming than I could imagine. I was already hooked by its combination of visual arts and literature, the latter being my one true love, yet the installation, with its detailed design and interactive spaces, was simply delightful. The museum also added some well-curated music to the mix, making for an all-round captivating experience.

If you’re ever in Santiago, I strongly recommend you visit Centro León. And if it happens to be from March 24th to May 14th, 2017 please don’t fail to catch this exhibit. Just go, trust me. Ripped jeans and messy ponytails are allowed.

Si le preguntas a alguien que me conoce bien sobre mi lugar favorito en Santiago, la respuesta es bastante fácil: El Centro León. Siendo uno de los museos más importantes del Caribe, el Centro León tiene ofertas de calidad para todo público, gusto y presupuesto. La cafetería, los jardines, la tienda, las galerías por supuesto… Todos los espacios exudan Cultura, con C mayúscula.

Sin embargo, para mí la belleza de este lugar está en las pequeñas cosas: El sabor de ese delicioso bizcocho de zanahoria, pasar horas sintiendo la brisa y leyendo un libro en el Patio Caribeño, o lo fácil que resulta salir del trabajo con jeans rotos y una colita, para terminar en la ceremonia de apertura de la exhibición “Dalí: Ilustrando Genios”.

Y sí, esa última de verdad pasó. Ahora les cuento.

Terminaba de cenar luego de un largo día en la oficina, cuando me escribió un amigo preguntando “Vienes para la apertura de Dalí?”, y yo, muy segura, le contesté “Eso es mañana, correcto?”. “En verdad no”, me dijo. “Empieza en 15 minutos.” No debe ser difícil imaginarme mientras entraba en pánico en ese momento, ya que tenía meses esperando por esto. ¿Por que lo tenía agendado para el viernes? ¿Por qué fui a trabajar en Converse hoy, lo cual casi nunca hago? Todo esos pensamientos me pasaron por la cabeza en una fracción de segundo, pero luego de un breve intercambio le escribí a mi amigo: “Espérame, que voy de camino.” Y qué bueno que lo hice.

Por alguna razón la gente decidió vestirse especialmente elegante para el evento, el mismo día que salí con el pelo desarreglado y unos tenis viejos. De todos modos, desde las palabras introductoras de María Amalia León, Directora del Centro, yo ya estaba de lo más contenta. La exhibición, la cual comprende dos colecciones de ilustraciones de Dalí, sobre La Divina Comedia de Dante Alighieri y La Vida Es Sueño de Pedro Calderón de la Barca, fue más encantadora de lo que me podía imaginar. Ya la exposición tenía mi atención por su combinación de artes visuales con literatura, siendo esta última uno de mis grandes amores, pero el buen diseño museográfico, atención al detalle y espacios interactivos de la instalación llenó más que mis expectativas. El museo decidió también agregar al conjunto unas piezas musicales cuidadosamente escogidas, lo cual terminó de complementar lo que ya de por sí era una experiencia cautivadora.

Si estás en Santiago, de verdad te recomiendo que visites el Centro León. Y si resulta que puedes ir del 24 de Marzo al 14 de Mayo del 2017, no dejes de disfrutar esta exhibición. Por favor hazme caso y vé. Los jeans rotos y tenis viejos están permitidos.
