Donde Come Uno Comen Tre': Más Pruebas de que las Dominicanas son Pura Magia
Dominican women possess a secret super power. An ancient knowledge that seems to have spread everywhere on the island and beyond. It’s been passed down through generations, we see it in our mothers, aunts, neighbors and abuelas. I believe each and everyone of us has it inside. I’m talking about the trait I admire the most in Dominican women (and trust me, there is a lot to choose from), in the popular lingo we call it sacar de abajo, but we could also call it resourcefulness.
Resourcefulness (noun): the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.
Having limitations is known to spark creativity. When we lack the means to solve a problem, it can push us to make connections never thought of before. Limitations and problems are a little bit too common for women of all places and backgrounds, if you add to that the particular predicaments of living on an island in the middle of the Caribbean, you get a unique mix that prompts us to be even more ingenious.
It’s truly amazing the displays of strength and courage that are seen everyday and that, more often than not, go unappreciated. Like how tía Amarilis had to take her child with her to class everyday because that’s what it took to be able to obtain her degree or my grandmother, who managed to feed a whole family of 6 children with half a Queso Geo. How, without having electricity at home, mothers manage to send their children to school with their uniform looking sharp or how, without any resources and sometimes without proper education, some women have managed to successfully emigrate and take their entire family with them, I mean, the paperwork is crazy even for a millennial college graduate, and how they are able to do it blows my mind. That secret power of always finding something to offer when people arrive unexpected at our place, is the one that allows us to make a home out of four walls anywhere we are.
I think we should add this to our resumes. Yes, right under Other Skills, like driven or responsible, I’m going to just add Dominican Woman. Because it means that when faced with a challenge, I’m going to go out of my way to solve it. It means that my background empowers me to make connections that might be lost on others, and that if I can’t find the right solution, I’ll rub some vivaporú on it and that should do it. No, but seriously, what I love the most about this trait I’m talking about, resourcefulness, is that if we each reflect on our personal experiences, we would find so many ways in which we have seen it or even how we have applied it ourselves in our lives.
Sometimes I worry that abundance and technology is gonna make us get too comfortable and forget about this power, but then I remember that this resourcefulness I’m talking about doesn't stop at material things. I also believe we have an inexhaustible source of energy and willpower, a unique type of backbone —an ability to endure—. Let’s own it and show it to the world. So the next time you try to do something and think you don’t have the means available, remember, if the women before could do all those things, you can do anything.
Las mujeres dominicanas poseen un superpoder secreto. Un conocimiento antiguo que parece haberse regado por toda la isla y más allá. Ha sido pasado de generación en generación, lo vemos en nuestras madres, tías y abuelas. Creo que cada una de nosotras lo tiene dentro. Estoy hablando de la cualidad que más admiro de las dominicanas (y, créeme, hay mucho de donde escoger), de manera coloquial le decimos sacar de abajo.
Sacar de abajo: la habilidad de “salir de abajo de un camión”, de encontrarle solución a lo que parece imposible de lograr, de resolver. Sinónimo: meter mano.
Las limitaciones hacen que la creatividad fluya. Cuando faltan recursos para resolver un problema, empezamos a ver posibilidades que nunca habíamos pensado. Las limitaciones y los problemas son demasiado comunes para los mujeres en cualquier parte del mundo y sin importar de donde vengan, si a esto le sumas los obstáculos de vivir en una isla en el medio de caribe, obtienes una mezcla única que nos hace ser aún más ingeniosas.
De verdad que para mí son sorprendentes las muestras de coraje y fuerza que se ven a diario, y que muchas veces pasan desapercibidas. Como cuando la tía Amarilis tenía que llevar a su hijo a clases con ella y sentarlo en una butaca para así poder terminar la universidad y obtener su título o como mi abuela, que alimentaba a una familia de 6 hijos con medio Queso Geo. Como algunas madres que, sin tener luz, se las ingenian para que sus hijos lleguen a clases con el uniforme planchadito o mujeres que, sin recursos y a veces sin una educación formal, logran emigrar con toda la familia, o sea, es un papeleo fuerte hasta para una millenial graduada de universidad y todo, ver cómo lo logran me deja atónita. Ese superpoder secreto que nos permite siempre encontrar algo para brindar cuando llega una visita inesperada, es el que nos permite hacer un hogar de cuatro paredes en cualquier lugar del mundo en que nos encontremos.
Me gusta tanto esta cualidad que pienso que deberíamos incluirla en nuestros CVs. Sí, justo debajo de habilidades como decidida o responsable, ahí pondría: soy una mujer dominicana. Porque significa que ante cualquier reto encontraré la manera de buscarle la vuelta. Que mis raíces me dan el poder de hacer conexiones que otros no pueden, y que si no encuentro la solución a algo, le pongo un chín de vivaporú y eso lo resuelve, ¿verdad?. Pero, fuera de chercha, lo que me gusta más de este rasgo, sacar de abajo, es que si cada una de nosotras reflexionáramos sobre nuestras experiencias , encontraríamos muchas formas en las que lo hemos visto en las mujeres que nos rodean o, incluso, cómo lo hemos aplicado nosotras mismas en nuestras vidas.
A veces me preocupa que la abundancia y la tecnología nos hagan acomodarnos demasiado y se nos olvide este gran poder, pero luego recuerdo que sacar de abajo no se limita a cosas materiales. Creo que tenemos una fuente inagotable de energía y de fuerza de voluntad, un carácter único, la habilidad de sobrellevar miles de cosas a la vez. Mostremos todo esto con orgullo al mundo entero. Así que la próxima vez que intentes algo y creas que no tienes los medios necesarios, recuerda, si las mujeres que estuvieron antes lo lograron, tú puedes hacer eso y más.
