Evento: Hoboken Lean In Circle
This past Wednesday, August 15th I had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by the Lean In Hoboken Circle at the Ainsworth. It was a night full of great conversation and interesting stories, and one that made me excited about what is happening in my area.
Lean In Hoboken Circle, founded by Ang'john Ferreri, is a community for women in Hoboken, NJ and nearby areas to connect professionally and personally, leaded by Carolina Castro, Manisha Sachdev and Lianne H. The initiative belongs to the larger Lean In organization, which focuses on empowering women to “achieve their ambitions.” Since this was my first time attending a networking event like this one, I wanted to know more about the circle and its purpose so I sat down with Manisha and Carolina who were both co-hosting. Below they share more about the community and why they decided give their time to it.

“Lean in is all about providing women the ongoing support and inspiration to help them achieve their goals. When I found a circle in my neighborhood, I attended a happy hour where I met like-minded ladies.
At that time, the Hoboken circle had recently started and was in a need of a co-moderator to scale the presence in the area. I took up this opportunity and focused on designing the guided workshops, recruiting renowned speakers on various topics to empower our circle members to get out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to improve their skills.
Fast forward 1.5 years later, and the guided workshops are now our signature events. Our members eagerly look forward to the workshops and we usually have a full house.”

“Two years ago I attended my first event with Hoboken Lean In when it was still being developed. In College I studied Political Science and Women and Gender Studies and I have always been attracted to organizations that provide spaces for women to connect, share knowledge, and empower each other. So, naturally, I connected with the overall mission of Hoboken Lean In.
At Hoboken Lean In, we try to provide a space for professional women (of all backgrounds) to come together, network, and learn together. We do this through happy hours and our Guided Workshops series with experts in their respective fields. I love connecting with and supporting women who are looking to personally grow and achieve their goals. It's also helped me feel more confident in asking for a raise and promotion, and even apply to graduate school! Women can actually have it all - it just requires having a strong network of women and men who support you and your dreams.”
These ladies are creating a safe and welcoming space for women to connect not only professionally but socially and I hope if you’re in the area you stop by one of their events because they are definitely worth making time for.
El pasado Miércoles 15 de Agosto tuve la oportunidad de asistir a un evento organizado por Lean In Hoboken Circle en el Ainsworth. Fue una noche llena de buenas conversaciones e historias interesantes, y una que me emocionó por lo que está sucediendo en mi área.
Lean In Hoboken Circle, fundado por Ang'john Ferreri, es una comunidad para mujeres en Hoboken, NJ y áreas cercanas que les permite conectarse con otras mujeres profesional y personalmente y está liderada por Carolina Castro, Manisha Sachdev y Lianne H . La iniciativa pertenece a la organización Lean In, la cual se enfoca en empoderar a las mujeres para "lograr sus ambiciones." Como esta era la primera vez que asistía a un evento de networking como este, quería saber más sobre el círculo y su propósito así que me senté con Manisha y Carolina, quienes eran las co-organizadoras presentes. A continuación ellas comparten un poco sobre la comunidad y por qué decidieron dedicarle tiempo a esta incitativa.

"Lean In se concentra en proporcionar a las mujeres el apoyo continuo y la inspiración para ayudarles a alcanzar sus metas. Cuando encontré un círculo en mi área, asistí a un happy hour donde conocí a mujeres con propósitos e ideas similares a las mías.
En ese momento, el círculo de Hoboken apenas estaba comenzando y necesitaban una co-moderadora para escalar la presencia en el área. Aproveché esta oportunidad y me centré en el diseño de talleres guiados, reclutando oradores de renombre sobre diversos temas para ayudar a las asistentes de nuestro círculo a salir de su zona de confort y desafiarse a sí mismas para mejorar sus habilidades.
Ya 1.5 años después, los talleres guiados son ahora nuestros eventos más exitosos. Nuestros miembros esperan ansiosamente los talleres y por lo general tenemos una casa llena."

"Hace dos años asistí a mi primer evento con Hoboken Lean In cuando todavía estaba en desarrollo. En la universidad, estudié ciencias políticas y estudios de mujeres y de género, y siempre me han atraído las organizaciones que brindan espacios para que las mujeres se conecten, compartan conocimientos y se capaciten mutuamente. Entonces, naturalmente, me sentí identificada con la misión general de Hoboken Lean In.
En Hoboken Lean In, tratamos de proporcionar un espacio para que mujeres profesionales (de todos los orígenes) se reúnan, trabajen en comunidad y aprendan juntas. Hacemos esto a través de happy hours y nuestra serie de talleres guiados con expertos en sus respectivos campos. También me ayudó a sentir más confianza al pedir un aumento y una promoción, ¡e incluso aplicar a la escuela de postgrado! Las mujeres realmente pueden tenerlo todo, solo tienes que tener una sólida red de mujeres y hombres que la apoyan a ella y a sus sueños."
Estas mujeres están creando un espacio seguro y acogedor para que las mujeres se conecten no solo profesionalmente sino también socialmente y espero que si estás en la zona te animes a asistir uno de sus eventos porque definitivamente valen la pena.
Lorena is currently a Media and Communications major at Montclair State University and resides in New Jersey. She was born in Santo Domingo but moved to the states at the age of twelve. She is a passionate womanist and has an addiction to history documentaries. She was a former production intern for Malka Media and assisted as a PA in shoots for big brands like L’Oreal and others. / Lorena actualmente se especializa en Medios y Comunicaciones en Montclair State University y reside en Nueva Jersey. Ella nació en Santo Domingo pero se mudó a los Estados Unidos a los doce años.
