I think it is very evident to everyone reading this blog that I very much love social media. I mean, I should, it's my job now!

I am personally delighted to see the momentum the fashion and beauty industry is having back home in  the Dominican Republic and get extremely excited when I see fashion and beauty bloggers doing well, especially when I actually know them.

After following Paola for more than I can remember and seeing her become this amazing makeup artist, I decided that it was about time I reached out to her to find what inspired her to go into makeup and where she wants to go in the near future, because in case you haven't seen her work, she is really good!

Tells us a little bit about yourself!

I’m Paola Pimentel, born and raised in Santiago, Dominican Republic where I’m currently a student majoring in Architecture. I have always loved art and everything that goes with it. Ever since I was a kid my hobbies had something to do with painting and DIY projects. I tried everything put my way, and because of that I believe you can only know yourself and your personal taste when you commit to learn something new.

Where/how did you learn to do makeup? Did you ever receive formal training? If so, where?

Everything started with youtube, my biggest obsession being makeup artist Michelle Phan. After that, I took some makeup classes in Santiago, but never professional makeup. One summer I finally went to Chic Studios NY  and took a professional makeup course.

Where do you normally find inspiration? Do you usually find it in social media/ the internet or do they come from your family, friends or some unexpected place?

Social Media is always a great place to find inspiration, but most of the time my inspiration comes from faces. It’s working with different eye shapes, bone structures and complexions that inspires me to do certain looks, or learning about new products that inspire me to come up with color combinations or techniques.  

What is your favorite thing about makeup and being a makeup artist?

I love how the beauty and makeup industry are constantly changing and evolving, and there is so much one can do inside it, not just makeup application. That is why researching and connecting with other artists is so important.

What changes have you seen in your area (makeup and beauty industry) in the Dominican Republic, and what you would like to see more of?

The makeup and beauty industry is definitely growing in our country. I guess mostly thanks to social media, nowadays it is so easy to connect and broadcast your work. I have seen some makeup academies being born, I love that! They still have a long way to go compared to what is offered internationally, but it is a big deal that they are taking time to pay attention to different programs and the right way to teach makeup artistry.

What are your short and long term goals with your career as a makeup artist?

At the top of my list is to finish my major, in order to fully commit to my career as makeup artist and work on my portfolio. At some point I’d like to set up a studio, not just for me to work as a makeup artist, but for other artists too, a space to collaborate and work together.

Creo que es evidente para todo el que lee este blog que aprecio muchísimo las redes sociales. También tengo que, ya que ahora es mi trabajo!

Personalmente me fascina cuando veo la popularidad que la industria de la moda y la belleza están teniendo en República Dominicana y me da mucha emoción cuando veo a blogueras locales de moda y de belleza crecer, especialmente cuando las conozco personalmente.

Después de seguir a Paola por más tiempo del que puedo recordar y disfrutar verla convertirse en una estupenda maquillista, era hora de que conectara con ella para aprender un poco más acerca de qué la inspiró a iniciarse en el mundo del maquillaje y cuáles son sus metas para el futuro cercano, porque si no lo sabes todavía, Paola tiene muchísimo talento!

Dinos un poco acerca de ti!

Soy Paola Pimentel, nacida y criada en Santiago, República Dominicana donde actualmente estudio Arquitectura. Siempre me ha gustado mucho el arte y todo lo que viene con el y desde que era niña mis pasatiempos siempre tenían que ver algo con pintura y manualidades. Traté toda clase creativa a la que tuve acceso y por eso creo que solamente te puedes llegar a conocer a ti mismo/a y tus gustos cuando te dedicas a aprender algo nuevo.

Dónde aprendiste el arte del maquillaje? Has recibido algún entrenamiento profesional? Si fue así, donde?

Todo comenzó con YouTube, mi más grande obsesión era con la maquillista Michelle Phan. Luego de seguirla por mucho tiempo tomé algunas clases en Santiago, pero nunca profesionales. No fué hasta que fui a Nueva York un verano cuando tomé mi primer curso profesional en Chic Studios NY.

Donde normalmente encuentras inspiración? Dirías que muchas ideas vienen de las redes sociales y el internet o sueles encontrar inspiración en tu familia, amigos/as u algún otro lugar inesperado?

Las redes sociales son una buena herramienta para encontrar inspiración pero la mayoría de la misma para mí viene de observar caras. Trabajar con diferentes formas de los ojos, estructura ósea o facciones me ayuda a mantenerme creativa, o cuando aprendo acerca de un nuevo producto que me inspira a pensar en diferentes combinaciones y técnicas.

Qué es lo que más te gusta del maquillaje y de poder hacerlo al nivel tuyo?

Me encanta como la industria de la belleza y el maquillaje siempre está cambiando y evolucionando, y más que nada lo mucho que se puede hacer dentro de la misma que no solo abarca la aplicación de maquillaje. Por eso considero que es súper importante siempre estar aprendiendo y conociendo a otros artistas.

Cuáles cambios has visto en la industria de belleza y maquillaje en República Dominicana?

La industria de la belleza y maquillaje ha crecido muchísimo en el país, y me atrevería a decir que mucho es gracias a las redes sociales que nos permiten exponer nuestro trabajo fácilmente. También he visto muchas más academias de maquillaje formarse, lo cual me encanta! Nuestro país tiene mucho camino por recorrer en términos de lo que actualmente existe en el mercado internacional pero es de suma importancia el hecho de que estas nuevas academias estén poniendo atención a los diferentes programas que existen y aprendiendo  la manera correcta de enseñar el arte del maquillaje.

Cuales son tus metas en el corto y largo plazo dentro de tu carrera en el maquillaje profesional?

Al tope de la lista está terminar mi carrera en arquitectura para luego concentrarme en mi carrera como maquillista y trabajar duramente en mi portafolio. En el futuro me gustaría tener mi propio estudio que también sea accesible para otros artistas como un espacio para colaborar y trabajar juntos.
