Things I've Learned About New York
When I finally got accepted to FIT and packed my bags to move to this captivating city, I had such a different idea of what this place and living here were.
In the 4 years I have living in this breathtaking city, I have learned some good lessons, and maybe even facts about New York, that I thought it would be good to share for anyone considering moving to New York, wether if it’s for school, for business or to start a new chapter of their lives.
It is super expensive to live here: Whatever budget you have in your mind, try to double that and add a thousand. The beauty of this city is that there are a lot of resources to choose from, many very inexpensive and affordable, but at the end of the day when you add up taxes, transportation and rent this city is off the roof expensive. Why do I bring this up? Because many people that contact me for advice about moving here don’t quite have a realistic budget to make this city work, and I rather tell the honest truth.
You only succeed if you work harder than you ever thought: I know it can sound like a cliche, and it probably applies to living anywhere, but I mean it when I said this city is full of opportunities only available to those that decide to give up months on sleep on their lifetime. New York is where it all happens so you need to understand that whatever incredible talent you have, there are plenty of people that have it as well here. It is imperative that you work to build an unique personal brand, and that you are willing to put up extra hours, sweat and tears worth of work.
New Yorkers come off as rude, but mostly because they are crazy busy: You are going to bump into some very nasty people on a daily basis, but it’s important that you know that they do not represent the entire city. New Yorkers are kind, very much aware of the world beyond the city limits and different cultures, and are often the most open minded people you will meet, but they (we) are crazy busy all day every day. So yes, the vast majority of people on a train is rushing to get to or from work, has a million things on their mind and quite possibly doesn’t know how to pay next month’s rent. So be kind, step aside when texting and offer a few smiles a day, people love that here.
New York is in fact one of the best cities in the world. There is always something happening, a new place to visit, a new art exhibit and a million restaurants to try. If you are willing to try your best, then come. It’s worth it.

Cuando por fin me aceptaron en FIT y empaque mis maletas para mudarme a esta impresionante ciudad, tenía una idea super diferente de lo que era vivir aquí.
En los cuatro años que tengo viviendo en esta cautivadora ciudad he aprendido muchas buenas lecciones, y hasta creo que se pudiesen llamar realidades, que creo que sería bueno compartir con todo aquel que esté considerando mudarse a Nueva York,ya sea para ir a la universidad, negocios o iniciar una nueva etapa.
- Es increíblemente caro vivir en esta ciudad: Cualquiera que sea el presupuesto que has calculado, trata de que sea doble y agregarle otros mil. La belleza de esta ciudad es que hay muchos recursos para escoger, muchos de ellos económicos, pero cuando agregas los impuestos, el costo del transporte y la renta, esta ciudad es insólitamente cara. Porque hablo de esto? Siento que cada vez que alguien me contacta en busca de consejos acerca de venir a Nueva York, generalmente los presupuestos pensados no son realistas para hacer funcionar esta ciudad y yo prefiero ser honesta.
- Solo te irá bien si estás dispuesto/a a trabajar más duro de lo que siempre pensaste: se que puede sonar como un cliché o algo que verdaderamente aplica a vivir en cualquier lugar, pero lo digo en serio. Esta ciudad está llena de oportunidades, solo para los que están dispuestos/as a sacrificar muchos meses de sueño. Nueva York es donde todo pasa así que debes entender que cualquiera que sea el talento increíble que tienes, hay muchas personas con el mismo que viven aquí también. Es obligatorio que trabajes para crear una única y fuerte marca personal y que estas dispuesto/a a poner mucho trabajo, sudor y lágrimas.
- Los neoyorquinos pueden parecer groseros, pero generalmente es por lo ocupado que siempre están: Vas a encontrarte con mucha gente grosera en tu día a día pero es importante que sepas que ellos no representan a toda la ciudad. La gente de Nueva York es buena, súper conscientes del mundo fuera de los límites de la ciudad y las diferentes culturas, y generalmente poseen las mentes más abiertas que conocerás, pero como he mencionado siempre están sumamente ocupados/as. Así que sí, la mayoría de la gente en los trenes está corriendo hacia o desde el trabajo, tiene un millón de cosas en la cabeza y es muy probable que no sepa cómo pagar la renta el próximo mes. Se compasivo, muévete a un lado cuando estés en tu celular y ofrece varias sonrisas al día, a todo el mundo les encantan.
No tengo ninguna duda de que esta ciudad es de las mejores en el mundo. Siempre hay un nuevo evento, un lugar nuevo para visitar, una exhibición de arte y un millón de restaurantes para conocer. Si estás dispuesto a dar lo mejor de ti, ven. Vale la pena.
