We’ve already covered the great debt of sexual education that the Dominican Republic has with its people. That is why this young santiaguera decided to become a sexual therapist, to be able to offer others the quality information on sexuality that was difficult for her to find at the time. In this interview, Laura Persia tells us about her journey, which took her from Santiago to Seville, in order to become a sexual therapist.
Tell us a little about yourself and your career!
I studied general psychology at PUCMM in Dominican Republic, and after finishing the degree I spent a year working. Still, it was very clear to me, from my sophomore year, that I was interested in the clinical area, more specifically in Sex and Couples Therapy.
Later on I got a scholarship to go to Spain, not for the masters I wanted but to study Psychopedagogy at the University of Seville, so I took the opportunity to do a Master's degree in Sexology at the same university. I was fortunate enough that the Master's degree in Psychopedagogy has a specialty in Personal and Professional Development, which deals with issues of counseling and transitions in life, which turned out to be useful for sexual and couples therapy.
What caught your attention about studying sexuality?
The issue of sexuality called my attention because nobody talked about it. I studied at a Catholic school, and the upbringing that my mother gave me was also marked by Catholicism. When I went to college there were no sexology subjects, and I was also a follower of Sexplanations, a Youtube channel dedicated to sex education.
At the same time, I started reading books and took the Sexology class, which left me expecting more. That helped me define more what I wanted to do as a professional, because neither in school nor anywhere else do you get proper sex education. In the DR we have alarming rates of gender violence crimes, teenage pregnancies and unwanted pregnancies and these issues can all be prevented with sex education.
Having studied outside of the Dominican Republic, did you perceive any difference between attitudes towards sexuality in Spain in relation to the island?
Since I was surrounded by people who studied sexology, they all had avery open mind, but in the DR there are also very open-minded people. It's a matter of education and access to information.
What challenges did you face while studying sexuality?
It was challenging to deal with the topic of abortion, since I was raised Catholic both at home and at school. Abortion was a subject in which I went to Spain thinking one thing and came back thinking another. I am a firm believer that when you learn, you usually have a better opinion because it is based on reality, not only on your beliefs. When you learn something, you can form an opinion that really is yours. It's a matter of understanding, and not just understanding, but not judging. As a therapist you cannot judge.
Tell us about something that you feel proud of or that moved you in your time abroad
In Spain I had the opportunity to go to my first gay pride march, along with my classmates and teachers. Even better, the participation in the march was organized by the director of the master and my internship tutor.
Any advice for someone who is interested in becoming a sex therapist?
I still watch the YouTube channel Sexplanations, which I really like. But mainly just read a lot of books. I recommend "The vertical smile" which is a collection of books on eroticism and sexuality. There are also more scientific books such as those of Felix Lopez, pioneer of sexual therapy in Spain, and Lucas Platero, on trans theory.
Even so, read not only books, but also articles. Any text, even magazine articles, that you can read and say "that's not true," that's also learning.
What are your plans for the next two years?
As soon as I can, I would like to start seeing patients here in DR. I would also like to give therapy in the public area, because it is very necessary. Later, I would like to go to schools and colleges, not only at the high school level but also in middle school, and I also want to teach at the university, since I have always liked to teach. I hope that if a student has that same interest in sexuality that I had when I was studying, that they can find quality content at the university.
Ya hemos tocamos la gran deuda de educación sexual que tiene la República Dominicana con su gente. Es por eso que esta joven santiaguera decidió prepararse como terapeuta sexual, para poder ofrecer a otros la información de calidad sobre sexualidad que se le dificultó encontrar en su momento. En esta entrevista, Laura Persia nos cuenta un poco sobre su historia, que la llevó de Santiago a Sevilla, buscando convertirse en terapeuta sexual y de pareja.
¡Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti y tu carrera!
Estudié psicología general PUCMM y luego de concluir la carrera duré un año trabajando. Pero tenía muy claro desde el segundo año de la carrera que me interesaba el área clínica, específicamente terapia sexual y de pareja.
Luego obtuve un beca para ir a España, no para lamaestría que quería sino para estudiar Psicopedagogía en la Universidad de Sevilla, por lo que aproveché para al mismo tiempo hacer maestría en Sexología en esa misma universidad. Tuve la suerte de que la maestría en Psicopedagogía tiene especialidad en Desarrollo Personal y Profesional, lo cual trata temas de counseling y transiciones en la vida, por lo que también me es útil para la terapia sexual y de pareja.
¿Qué te llamó la atención de esa área?
El tema de sexualidad me llamaba la atención porque nadie hablaba de eso. Estudié en un colegio católico, y la formación que me dio mi mamá también se vio marcada por la religion católica. En el momento en que estudié la carrera no había materias de sexología, y también era seguidora de Sexplanations, un canal de Youtube que se dedica a la educación sexual.
Al mismo tiempo, empecé a leer libros y tomé la electiva Sexología de la carrera, de la cual esperaba más. Eso me ayudó a definir más que es lo que quería hacer como profesional, porque ni en el colegio ni en ninguna parte uno recibe educación sexual. En RD tenemos índices alarmantes de crímenes de violencia de género, embarazos adolescentes, embarazos no deseados y . todo esto Eso se previene con educación sexual.
Al haber estudiado fuera de la República Dominicana, ¿Percibiste alguna diferencia entre las actitudes hacia sexualidad en España en comparación con el país?
Como me rodeaba de personas que estudiaban sexología, estaba cerca de personas con mentalidad muy abierta, pero igual en RD también hay personas muy abiertas. Es cuestión de educación y del acceso a la información
¿Tuviste algún reto al mientras estudiabas sobre sexualidad?
Fue retador tratar el tema del aborto, ya que fui criada en la casa y en la escuela con religión católica. Eso fue un tema con el que llegué a España pensando una cosa y regresé pensando otra. Soy muy creyente de que cuando aprendes, sueles tener una mejor opinión porque está más basada en la realidad, no solo en tus creencias. Cuando aprendes de algo, puedes formar una opinión que de verdad sea tuya. Es cuestión de entender, y no solo entender, sino también no juzgar. Como terapeuta no puedes juzgar.
Cuéntanos sobre algo de lo que te sientas orgullosa, o que te emocionó mucho
En España tuve la oportunidad de ir a mi primera marcha del orgullo gay, junto con mis compañeros y profesores. Incluso, la participación en la marcha fue organizada por la directora del máster y mi tutora de prácticas.
¿Algún consejo para una persona que esté interesada en ejercer terapia sexual?
Todavía sigo viendo el canal de youtube Sexplanations, que me gusta mucho. Pero principalmente libros, leer mucho. Recomiendo “La sonrisa vertical” que es una colección de libros de eroticismo y sexualidad. También hay libros más científicos como los de Félix López, pionero de la terapia sexual en España, y de Lucas Platero, sobre la teoría trans.
Incluso, leer no solo libros, sino también artículos. Cualquier texto, incluso artículos de revistas, que lo puedas leer y decir “eso no es verdad,” ya eso es un aprendizaje.
¿Cuales son tus planes para los próximos dos años?
Desde que pueda me gustaría ver pacientes aquí en RD. Me gustaría también dar terapia en el sector público, porque hace mucha falta. Más adelante me gustaría ir a colegios y escuelas, no solo a nivel de bachillerato sino también del nivel básico, y también quiero dar clases en la universidad, ya que siempre me ha gustado dar clases. Espero tener la oportunidad de que si un estudiante tiene esa misma inquietud sobre sexualidad que tuve yo, pueda encontrar contenido de calidad en la universidad.
